Calling the Living: Week 1

Yesterday I was super busy with cleaning, packing, moving, hosting family and friends, etc., and I didn't get a chance to post. So sorry to let you down our first week! Thank you Claire for your thoughts, and Birgitta for actually being accountable! Please comment on this post to let us all know how you did this week!

I had great success with exercise this week, but not so much with eating. It is amazing to me how the best of intentions can be so crushed by life--this week moving, cleaning, all the kids home, AWOL husband (not permanently, thankfully), worried about the money to buy food in the first place, and not even a chance to think about meals until we are an hour, two hours, three hours over when we should have eaten. Not sure how to juggle everything. So I am changing my goals up a bit this week to keep it healthy, but more simple than journaling. I am calling it the 100-Day Berkley Challenge after my father-in-law who insists that if we eat the right foods we can eat as much as we want and still reach a healthy weight. So I'm putting his advice to the test so I can not worry about journaling for the next little while during our stressful transition. And I'm going to keep exercising--even if some days that is just lugging boxes up and down the stairs for hours on end.

What goals worked for you this week? What got in the way of doing what you wanted? What can you do differently this week? I'd love for you to post your thoughts here!

  1. Alison, thanks for continuing to post even on a bad week. It keeps me going. So, I even though I thought my goal of coming home weighing less was realistic and simple, it didn't work b/c I don't have access to a scale this week. Amazing how the simplest goals can be waylaid. But I stumbled upon this web site yesterday and it gave me an idea for this week:

The idea is to have 16 hours a day of fasting and 8 hours of eating healthy. I think the idea of eating lots of small meals may be great for some people, but for some of us, it just leads to grazing all day long. So, for a week I'm going to try having herb tea for breakfast, breakfast at about 11 am, lunch at about 3 or 4 and dinner about 7. I like the idea of "delayed gratification." Do not think that I am asking you to follow along. We each have our own method. But I just want to test that theory that skipping breakfast is bad for you. Apparently, all the research does not support that theory. So, here goes. Just for this week.

  2. OK, all you Morgue defying Mamas! Where are you? So, I tried intermittent fasting and I found out what you probably predicted. If you're going to fast, it's just like any other kind of fasting. 1) Don't have a bunch of bad food around when you break the fast. 2) If you add a spiritual component, you'll be more successful. 3) Really, why don't you get serious and contribute the cost of the meal to the poor? I mean, that will keep you honest. You really should be skipping a meal. Just saying. How are all of you doing?
